The technical SEO that actually matters

13 July 2026

Technical SEO has a bad reputation because most of what's written about it is a checklist of two hundred items, of which about twelve matter. These are the twelve: what each one actually does, how it fails, and how to check yours this afternoon.

The short version
  • Most technical SEO problems are one of four things: the page can't be crawled, it's duplicated, it's only visible after JavaScript runs, or nothing internal links to it.
  • Canonical tags are a hint, not a directive — and self-referencing canonicals on every page prevent a whole class of duplicate-content problems for free.
  • JavaScript rendering is the one that catches modern stacks. Google does render JS, but on a delay and with a budget, and client-only content is a real risk. Server-render anything you want ranked.
  • Internal linking is the most under-used lever in technical SEO. It is entirely within your control, costs nothing, and most sites have important pages three or four clicks from the homepage.
  • Core Web Vitals are real but modest. Fix them for users; don't expect a ranking jump.
