Launching somewhere without getting thrown out of it

22 June 2026

A launch is a one-shot channel: a spike of attention you get once, worth having for the evidence rather than the traffic. This is what each venue actually rewards, what gets you removed from it, and how to convert four days of attention into something that lasts longer than four days.

The short version
  • A launch's real value is not the traffic. It is the first cohort of users, the feedback, the first backlinks, and something to point at afterward.
  • Every venue has one thing it rewards and one thing it punishes. Product Hunt rewards a polished, demoable artefact; Hacker News rewards technical substance and punishes marketing language.
  • Reddit is not a launch platform. It is a set of communities that will accept a launch from someone who has been a member, and remove one from someone who hasn't.
  • Do not launch everywhere on the same day. Stagger them: each one is a separate audience and a separate set of expectations, and a spike you can't respond to is wasted.
  • The single highest-return launch-day activity is answering every comment personally, fast, including the critical ones. Especially the critical ones.
